As we transition rapidly away from Summer we take a look at some of our favourite Winter looks. In particular this feature focuses on trousers and how you can make a real feature of these simple pieces.
Flannel
A business casual staple, flannel fabric is having a new lease of life as one of the top trends for menswear in AW21.
A soft fuzzy type of wool that was designed specifically to keep the wearer warm in the unpredictable British winter. It’s an easy fabric to wear in a professional way, such as a two-piece flannel suit as well as being able to pair flannel trousers with a piece of knitwear and trainers for a more casual look.
If you are just purchasing a pair of flannel and not a suit, try opting for a pair that is cropped and pleated in a classic grey to start with.
All in all a great fabric for winter trousers that will have you right on trend this coming season.
Corduroy
Some people avoid corduroy as it gives off a 70s teacher vibe, but over the last couple of years, corduroy has had a massive comeback especially in menswear. A pair of corduroy trousers are something super stylish to add to your wardrobe.
Corduroy is an extremely sturdy and warm fabric that is hard-wearing, basically perfect for the wet and cold.
Originating from factory uniform as a cheap alternative to wool, it has evolved into a great staple for any well-dressed man.
There is also the option of what size corduroy you want, you could choose something more subtle and softer with a baby cord or get chunky and stand out with a large wale (10-12 wale means 10-12 ribs per inch)
We recommend sticking to a tapered fit that leans to the original workman style which is great to pair with trainers or loafers.
Moleskin
Moleskin is in the same family as corduroy but without the ribs or ‘waling’. With a soft and velvety feel the cloth is extremely hard-wearing. Moleskin will definitely keep you warm in the winter.
Historically the cloth was used in military uniforms, which is why you often see it in green, black and brown colours.
Because the weave is so tight on moleskin it is often described as wind and weatherproof, perfect for the British Winter! They are the Winter version of the summer chino, making them great everyday trousers.
Check
We think along with great fabric for your winter trousers, you should be thinking about investing in a pair of check trousers.
We know this might not be for everyone but it’s always worth a try, and if you’ve ever worn pinstripe there isn’t much difference.
There are so many options out there for checks including houndstooth, windowpane, gingham and the Prince of wale’s check, you are sure to find something that suits you.
When pairing check trousers try and keep it simple, with no pattern clashing.
