Answer Summary

How Long Does Bespoke Tailoring Take?

Bespoke tailoring at Fielding & Nicholson usually takes 6 to 8 weeks from your first consultation to your finished suit. The process starts with over 30 measurements to build a pattern made only for you, followed by 2 to 3 fittings to get the fit exactly right. You can start the process at any of our four showrooms.

Process Steps

The Bespoke Tailoring Process

A clear five-step process, from your first consultation to the day your finished suit is ready to wear.

  1. Consultation appointment at Fielding and Nicholson bespoke tailors. 1 First visit

    Consultation

Your first visit takes about an hour. We talk about what you need the suit for, look at fabric options together, and take your measurements. There's no pressure to decide anything on the spot.

  2. Tailor taking precise measurements for a bespoke suit pattern. 2 Pattern made for you

    Measurements and Fabric

We take over 30 measurements, along with notes on your posture and how you move. These build a pattern made only for you. You'll also choose your fabric, with help from your tailor if you want it.

  3. Baste fitting stage of a bespoke suit before final construction. 3 First fit check

    Baste Fitting

This is your first chance to see the suit taking shape. It's loosely stitched together so we can check the fit and make changes before anything is finished.

  4. Fitting appointment adjusting a bespoke jacket for the fit. 4 Fine tuning

    Further Fittings

Most clients need one or two more fittings. Each one checks the details, how the shoulders sit, the length of the sleeves, the fall of the trousers, until everything is right.

  5. Client collecting a finished bespoke suit at Fielding and Nicholson. 5 Ready to wear

    Final Fitting and Collection

At your final fitting, we check every seam, button and lining before your suit is pressed and ready to wear. Most suits are ready 6 to 8 weeks after your first visit.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the bespoke tailoring process?

The bespoke tailoring process is how we build a suit from scratch, made only for you. It starts with a consultation and measurements, moves through a baste fitting and further fittings, and ends with a final fitting where your finished suit is checked and pressed.

How long does a bespoke suit take?

Most bespoke suits take 6 to 8 weeks from your first consultation to collection. This gives enough time for your pattern to be drafted, your suit to be built, and each fitting to be done properly.

How many fittings will I need?

Most clients need 2 to 3 fittings. The first is a baste fitting, where the suit is only loosely stitched together so we can check the fit early. Further fittings refine the details until everything sits right.

What is a baste fitting?

A baste fitting is your first chance to try on your suit while it's still loosely stitched together. It lets us check the fit and make changes before the suit is fully constructed.

Do I need to know anything about fabric before I come in?

No. You don't need to know cloth names or construction terms before your consultation. Your tailor will bring samples, explain the options in plain terms, and help you choose based on how and when you'll wear the suit.

What does a bespoke suit cost?

The cost depends on the fabric you choose and the details you add, so we talk through budget at your free first consultation. There's no obligation to buy, and no hard sell.
