A guide to buying a wedding suit

Over our time as tailors, we have made many wedding suits sometimes with a long deadline and sometimes with extremally short deadlines, with grooms who know what they want and grooms that don’t. So here are the three basic things you should have a think about before you have your initial meeting with your tailor.

Shape/ style

Have a look and see what kind of suit you are drawn to. Most grooms go for a popular choice of a 3 piece, which is great when you want to take off your jacket later on in the evening to dance because you still have your waistcoat on.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other options such as double-breasted, pleated trousers or unstructured summer suits. Try and think about what style you are drawn to and bring in some imagery to your consultation.

Colour

You might have a theme or colour for your wedding but that doesn’t mean you have to wear that at all. You could find something that compliments it or that’s tonal but then again you could go for something completely different if you wish to stand out. A good idea is to bring in a colour palette that you like and that your significant other also likes.

Formality

There is also the aspect of how formal your event is going to be because this will also impact all your other choices.

If you are planning a black tie event then the colour becomes slightly irrelevant because you will go for black, white or something in dark velvet.

You might want a morning dress with a top hat and tails or you might be the complete opposite of the spectrum and want a very informal suit for hot weather and be looking at linens and unstructured tailoring.

Now all these things don’t have to be set in stone when you come in, even just some images of things you like, your wedding style and inspiration are a good start to show the tailoring consultant. They will then do their job of finding fabrics, and styles that go with your inspiration, which will help you narrow down your options.
