Winter Trouser Options

Winter Trouser Options

From Flannel to Corduroy there are hundreds of winter trouser options to choose from, including for all types of occasions: smart to smart casual and just casual.

When you have a perfectly tailored pair of trousers they are hugely versatile. Made to the perfect length, and pleated in just the right places a well-cut pair of trousers can be the focal point of an outfit.

Here are a few of our favourites along with some styling tips:

Wool

On the formal side wide-leg wool trousers, with very simple detailing, easy to wear and easy to pair, would preferably be worn to work as they are sleek and business appropriate. But with the right choice in a tightly woven wool, these would see you through the colder days and you could make them a bit more you by choosing an interesting coloured cloth or a slight pattern such as herringbone.

Flannel

The perfect fabric for business casual, Flannel is a soft textured kind of wool which is densely woven but perfectly designed to keep the wearer warm in the British climate. It’s extremely easy to wear and we think it looks great in muted tones such as greys and oatmeal. Once you’ve decided flannel is for you it’s then how you style it and we think it goes great with a pleated or cropped style of trousers.

Corduroy

We know that cord went out of style for a few years but it is definitely back and it’s an excellent winter trouser fabric which is thick, durable and warm – perfect for the wet and cold weather. It was originally a cheap wool alternative and should be a staple in any well-dressed man’s wardrobe. We would recommend opting for a chunkier cord as it has more body to the fabric and will feel thicker and warmer through the colder months.

Moleskin

An unusual fabric in modern men’s tailoring, moleskin was originally used to clothe miners as it was thick and hard wearing and was the forbearer of denim. It has a soft like velvet side to the fabric which looks great in natural colours such as browns and greens. Ask your tailor to show you some next time you are thinking about a new pair of trousers.

Heavy Drill

Much more common in casual trousers a heavy drill softens up with time and depending on what style of trousers you make it often leans towards a more casual look. It’s very popular in elasticated or drawcord waist trousers at the moment and creates a baggy relaxed shape. These would definitely be weekend trousers for most people.
