How to wear a flannel shirt

A soft woven fabric, flannel was traditionally made form carded wool or worsted yarn.  It’s now more commonly made from wool, cotton or synthetic fibres.

Flannel shirts are a real staple for a casual wardrobe as they are great for layering as well as wearing them by themselves.

So here are our opinions on how to wear a flannel shirt

Plain or checked?

Although your mind might jump to a check or tartan when we say flannel shirt, they are actually available in a wide variety of prints, patterns and plain styles.

Prints and checks give the flannel shirt a more casual vibe whilst a plain will give a sharper more polished appearance.

If you choose a check, make sure to balance your outfit by opting for more minimal layers and a plain pair of trousers and minimal jacket.

When to wear it

Traditionally in the leisure side of your wardrobe, a flannel shirt can also be dressed up for a look which is smarter but still casual.

An ideal weekend shirt for wearing round the house or great for a date or dinner. Try aiming for a neat and polished look with smart shoes, a pair of chinos and a jacket to go with it.

But – when it comes to events and business situations – leave the flannel shirt at home.
