5 types of shirts every well-dressed man should have in their wardrobe

Fashion is ever-evolving but here are our top 5 shits every well-dressed man in 2023 should own. This small but mighty collection will cover you for formal dressing-up events to casual drinks at the pub on the weekend, but you will always look good.

The classic white dress shirt

A timeless piece that you just can’t do without, the dress shirt is perfect for formal events, office attire and business meetings.

When choosing a style discuss with your tailor what kind of cut you want and how you generally wear your shirts e.g. Buttoned to the top, tie or not, those kinds of things.

The perfect fitted shirt gives an air of confidence to oneself and you look extremally sharp.

So our rule even if you don’t often dress smart you must at least have one white dress shirt in your wardrobe somewhere.

Oxford button down

We have spoken at length in previous journal posts about the versatility of the Oxford cloth button-down and how it belongs in every man’s wardrobe and we don’t lie.

It’s a shirt that can so easily be dressed up or dressed down, perfect for business casual or holidays and weekends. It comes in a huge range of colours and fabric choices so you are sure to find one just for you.

The Oxford cloth is a high-quality material which is just perfect for the varying British climate and if you only invest in one of our 5 shirts then this is the one we recommend.

Polo shirts

Another timeless sophisticated piece in our opinion but we do know that the polo shirt isn’t for everyone, you might only ever wear one on the golf course.

But the alternative to a golf polo is endless, with the vast collection of prints, patterns, fabrics, and sleeve lengths out there you are sure to find something that suits your taste.

It’s worth having a look at what’s out there because it’s such a handy shirt to have, it’s not quite formal but not quite casual it sits perfectly in the category of business casual or smart casual.

Flannel shirt (overshirt)

Perfect for the colder months or throwing over a T-shirt in the summer or spring to add a bit of layering and warmth as you go into the evening a flannel or overshirt is such a modern style trend but we are all for it.

It’s very much for your casual looks, maybe weekends or after work but we think they are great layering pieces. We would recommend looking for a slightly heavier-weight cotton or drill so it gives it a more jacket feel. But you should definitely invest in one or more.

Linen shirt

This should only come out on holiday or when we have that rare occasion in the UK of really good weather.

It’s a shirt that will keep you cool as it’s a loose weave natural fibre which has breathable properties allowing for air to circulate to your skin.

Coming In some great colours and styles a linen shirt is just a must-have, you can opt for a short sleeve or pullover style but they will definitely help you look great in the sun.

Let us know if there are any other shirt styles you think we should be looking at…
